Oyster Farming on the Cape & Islands

Oyster Farming on the Cape & Islands
Thursday, March 20, 2025 (6:00 PM - 7:00 PM) (EDT)
Description
Join us for our ACONS (A Celebration of Nantucket Sound) webinar with guest speaker Dan Martino. As co-owner of Cottage City Oysters, Dan has farmed the ocean on Martha's Vineyard for over a decade, becoming the first in the state to grow commercial seaweed and the first in the nation to become EU Organic certified for all shellfish and seaweed products on the farm. The Cottage City Oyster Farm Tour, which Dan hosts, is internationally recognized as one of the best oyster tour experiences available, and was the driving motivation for him to write The Oyster Book: A Chronicle of the World’s Most Fascinating Shellfish: Past, Present, and Future (published by Agate Publishing in September of 2024).
For this webinar, Dan will be talking about farming oysters on the Cape and Islands, including in the waters of Nantucket Sound. He will also touch on his celebrated oyster book—and his upcoming second novel.
A live Q&A with Dan and Alliance president Audra Parker will follow the presentation.
The Oyster Book dives into the history, methods, and future of oyster farming. What started as research for the tours, the 300+ page book has become the most detailed account of all things oysters ever published.
